Parenting a child with ADHD when your patience runs out

Lenio helps parents with the moment their own temper takes over. Talk a hard evening through tonight, or learn to catch the seconds before you snap.

If your child has ADHD, a lot of the day lands on you. The fifth reminder about shoes. The meltdown when screen time ends. The sharp word you hear yourself say, and replay at 10pm. Lenio gives you two minutes to talk it through tonight, free, and a short course on the run-up to the shout.

The evening in an ADHD house

You said it calmly the first time. And the second. By the fifth time, homework is still in the bag and your voice has an edge you didn't choose. Then something small happens, a spilt drink or a door slammed, and the whole evening tips over.

Many children with ADHD feel things fast and loud. When their feelings rise, yours tend to rise with them. That is how people work: children borrow calm from the adults near them, and adults catch the storm from the child in front of them. It says nothing bad about you, or about them.

You probably know the advice already. Stay calm, lower your voice, name the feeling. The hard part is using it at 7pm when you have been patient all day.

Why the advice vanishes at the worst moment

When you feel under threat, your body gets ready to act. Your heart speeds up, your jaw tightens and your voice gets louder. At the same time, the part of your brain that plans and holds back gets quieter. That is why a script you know by heart can disappear halfway through an argument.

There is almost always a short run-up before the shout. Most parents never notice it, because it passes in a few seconds. Noticing it a little sooner is enough to change what happens next.

one small thing to try this week

Next time you are about to give the fifth reminder, pause for one breath. Notice where you feel it first: a hot face, a tight jaw, your voice rising. Say that word to yourself. Nothing else yet.

Two ways Lenio can help

Tonight: talk it through, free

Lenio is a private chat for parents. You type what happened, even just "I shouted at him over homework again". It listens first, then helps you find one small next step for tomorrow. It remembers your household, so you never have to explain your child's ADHD twice. You can stop when someone calls for you.

Before the shout: a short course

Before the shout: neurodivergent edition is eight short lessons on the seconds before you snap. Lesson 7 is about exactly this: why your child's run-up sets off yours, and low-demand moves for the minutes before. You leave with your own early warning signs, a pause plan for the first ten seconds and a repair script for afterwards. It opens on 30 November, and a pre-order includes three months of Lenio from today.

I'm neurodivergent myself

I'm neurodivergent, and I built Lenio for my own hard evenings as a parent. However many books I read, there were still days when I got frustrated. I wanted somewhere I could be honest about that, and be heard before being offered an idea.

That shapes both the chat and the course. You can begin with the bit you remember most clearly. You don't need a plan for next time before you start.

Where do you feel it first?

When patience runs out fast, a few seconds of warning matters even more. Think of the last time you snapped. Where did it show up in your body?

Tap the one that fits. There is no wrong answer.

Before the shout: neurodivergent edition teaches the rest: what loads you up, the seconds before you snap, what to say afterwards, and two lessons for neurodivergent families. Eight short lessons, with 3 months of Lenio for the hard moment itself.

Questions parents ask

Is this an ADHD parenting programme?

No. Lenio and Before the shout are for you, the parent, in the moments when your own temper or shutdown takes over. They sit alongside any support from your child's school, GP or specialist team, and do not replace it.

Does it matter if I have ADHD too?

No. Many ADHD households have more than one person who is neurodivergent. You can talk about your own experience as well as your child's, and Lenio remembers the household you describe.

Can I use Lenio if my children are autistic?

Yes, including if your child is an adult. You can talk about your own experience of family life, whether you are neurodivergent yourself or have a different experience from your child.

Can I try a conversation before paying?

Yes, you can begin here before deciding whether to continue. The invitation to a seven-day trial comes after that first conversation.
